Top 5 Must-Ride Kokopelli Loops Near Fruita
Share
The Kokopelli Trail system outside Fruita and Grand Junction is one of Colorado’s most iconic desert trail networks, offering incredible views, fast singletrack, and technical challenges for every level of mountain biker. Whether you’re here for a quick rip or an all-day epic, these five loop trails are must-rides if you want a true taste of the Western Slope.
Before you go: bring plenty of water, watch for snakes in warmer months, and follow trail etiquette (more on that below). Check out the BLM Kokopelli's Trail Map to get a full picture of the all the amazing trails in this system!
1. Mary’s Loop + Horsethief Bench
- Trail Type: Lollipop
- Difficulty: Intermediate/Advanced (Horsethief drop-in is very technical)
- Distance: ~7 miles
This is a classic Fruita ride. Mary’s starts as a fast, flowy trail with a few short climbs and great views of the Colorado River. When you loop out on Horsethief Bench, be prepared for techy rock moves and some ledgy sections right along the edge of the canyon. The drop-in to Horsethief is a no-fall zone and most riders walk it. Don’t feel bad - it’s part of the tradition.
2. Steve’s Loop + Wrangler’s
- Trail Type: Lollipop
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Distance: ~6.5 miles
This ride is a bit smoother than Horsethief, with fast descents and some chunky climbs. Steve’s Loop winds through slickrock and scenic canyon country, while Wrangler’s adds a rolling finish. You’ll get a little bit of everything: views, flow, and a few tech punches to keep it spicy.
3. Moore Fun Loop
- Trail Type: Loop
- Difficulty: Advanced
- Distance: ~7.8 miles
As the name suggests, this trail is fun and brutal. It’s techy almost from the start, with constant ledge climbs, switchbacks, and loose corners. Best for confident riders with strong technical skills. If you like the challenge of riding chunky, exposed trail with amazing canyon views, this is your jam.
4. Rustler’s Loop
- Trail Type: Loop
- Difficulty: Beginner/Family Friendly
- Distance: ~3.7 miles
Perfect for beginners, families, or a quick warm-up before tackling the bigger loops. Rustler’s offers intro-level terrain with signs explaining how to ride different trail features. Great views of the river, smooth singletrack, and enough small climbs to get your heart going.
5. Lion’s + Troy Built + Mack Ridge Loop
- Trail Type: Loop
- Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced
- Distance: ~12 miles
This is one of the longer loops in the Kokopelli system. It combines exposed ridgelines, steep climbs, tight descents, and some of the best views in the area. Troy Built is a true test piece, with fast downhill and sharp switchbacks. Bring snacks—and maybe a repair kit—because this loop feels remote.
Trail Etiquette 101
- Yield appropriately: Bikers yield to hikers and horses. Uphill riders have the right of way.
- Don’t ride wet trails: It damages the surface and ruins the ride for others.
- Leave no trace: Pack out everything—including snack wrappers.
- Be aware: This is a multi-use trail system. Expect dogs, hikers, and other riders around every corner.
- Be kind: Say hi, give space, and represent the biking community well.
